WALTZING MATILDA Banjo Patterson Arrangement Anu Grace 2019. https://youtu.be/2gi6ShIpers Verse 1 Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong, Under the shade of a Coolibah tree, And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled, Who’ll come a Waltzing Matilda with me. Chorus Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda, Who’ll come a Waltzing Matilda with me, And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled Who'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me. Verse 2 Down came a jumbuck to drink at that waterhole; Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee, And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag, "You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me." Chorus ... And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled kookaburra sits in the old gum tree ...... Verse 3 Up rode the squatter mounted on his thoroughbred; Up rode the troopers: one, two, three: "Whose that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag? You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me." Chorus (with different last line) “You'll come a Waltzing, you scoundrel with me." Verse 4 Up jumped the swagman, sprang into that billabong: "You'll never take me alive," said he. And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong - "You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me

Fear came stalking my heart last night Queasy edge in the half light Shadows began to linger Watching my back like a ninja I felt my space shrink so very very small Easily led but not so easily ignored I panicked, Wondered which way to turn when I remembered it was only fear Dropped down, on my haunches Declared 'this is my place' Said it out loud in my deepest bass Come on, come on, Bring it, bring it show me your face Its only fear and from fear I can learn ...... And who said you had to live life that way who said, who said Mortage, debts, security, bylaws Who said that you would not be safe until you had it locked so tight in place who said, who said Who said we get older no wiser Who said you can't be bigger and brighter Who told you to stay small and lose who said who said Who Who

We have been brainwashed blinded to see this climate denial - denial denial denial Dark work of the Oligarchy Democracy sold out Consumers for the powers of greed And who can understand what Intentions command this countermovement of hypocrisy Time to wise up and see. What in hell is going on When it takes a girl of 17 to cry "You're doing it all wrong" "I shouldn't have to be here, I should be still in school" but you've stolen my childhood, my future too" What will it take For a Great Turning where we join the children to fight the real cause still warming in the fist of the right lies the money, lies the might I don't wanna believe they're evil but Greta might've got it right what will it take Interlude With a Great Turning we could all be Navigators Eyes to the wind, flying, our Ithaca's all aligning And all of us Captains, all of us Crew Humbled and hungry by the largesse of the view And on that Great Turning , we allow ourselves to feel this knife edge of Life n death, Reminds us how to kneel before The Beauty of this Earth Respect again all the life In face of our mortality, be moved from this Vice And in that Great Turning how deeply woven threads Waken us to wonder to that fragile butterfly wing And the I and the I and the I of it all Linking arms around the Sun And back and back and back again to Kin and Country again What did it take? How did we get through It was only when, we began to think of You

GOOD THINGS COMING Here's a little song that I wrote - not for you To remind me that even tho you stone broke my heart that I'm not broken still I had to learn to love the cracks, the things that break the things that smack coz they burn off the dross and only through that loss can I be whole again Coz everything that comes around goes around to come again that's why i'm smiling coz I know We got good things coming Back in old Japan they have a way to repair Broken pottery is filled with gold and valued all the more For the richer story that is told that what is broken, what is old given love n care, can be so much more than it used to be Coz Everything that comes around goes around to come again we get a second chance to bring Light to circumstance and Everything that comes around, goes around to come again that's why i'm smiling coz I know We got good things coming We got good things coming Yeah We got good things coming

Chicken Bones Just slip out the back Jack crack the back of this madness where the chicken bones bubble and all this trouble is just a thickening of the brew Dance your dance here while you still got your hand in Wiggle your hips on a mid nite cruise ship Sail on through the dark Coz you know truth you got a subterranean radar for it even while you play the Game of Thrones Your Gut knows Truth but you want to play strip Jack naked Keep throw'n up our dice, you'll end up a pile o bones Remember a time when you're all gossamer light thread And dust to dust you want to coalesce and land here on this Earth No sooner you thought that, you hear a knock at the door that's Your brand new Mother welcoming you Home But you know truth you got a subterranean radar for it even while you play the Game of Thrones Your Gut knows Truth but you want to play strip Jack naked Keep throw'n up our dice, you'll end up a pile o bones Yeah you know Truth when it falls so neat in the palm of your hand Laying waste your arsenal of plans You know truth with it's serendipitous timing and all those things you can't explain And all those things you can't explain!

This flame in my heart has burned since Time began Right from the start never ever been apart I remember When I remember And I know seems the road, been so long and cold All alone you've shouldered your load Did you remember ThIs Flame in your Heart Close as your Breath Warm & receiving Always Here When your world needs redeeming Whenever you feel lost, then Remember this Pulse *. *. *. * that's beats *. *. in the darkness of your Heart Woooah So come home from the cold Wander no more alone Sit before this Hearth where your name is etched in Blood And Remember this Flame in your Heart

about

BELONG TO COUNTRY was mostly written in Alice Springs in 0ctober 2019 in response to a desperate call out to spirit during the worst onset of Ross river fever. The message came back ‘record an album’ - working title ‘Midnite Sun’- in reference to trying to find the light in a dark place.
It was 2am, a year ago on the full moon, that I booked Jez Conlon of ‘Left of Elephant Sound ‘ in Alice Springs. I had nothing! Then through out the sickness period, the selling of our house, the packing & moving, the buying a bus to set off touring, I still had nothing! Even when we finally got to Alice, I had nothing more.
Then in a period of solitude, in the bus for the first time alone, I dedicated each day to writing, 9-5 pm. The recording date loomed, and I cobbled these 10 songs together and spent 3 days in the studio.
We then hit the road touring The Pop Up Ukestra, workshops and gigs as duo UKE NOMAD down thru Adelaide, over to WA for the first time, then 6 weeks in Tasmania to Victoria.
Our first track on the Album, Waltzing Matilda was chosen to front all the collations of the song in Australian history, in the iconic outback town of Winton, where Banjo Patterson first penned the song over a hundred years ago. They were going to fly us in from Canberra to play the song and give it national airplay. Well damn I thought I better have that album completed ( since Winton was where Ross river Fever had bitten me in the first place.)

5 mths had passed since Alice, and on a re-listen I knew it needed drums. Not knowing if I had anything of value, we went for a DIY home record drums session which turned out to be the wrong process. I decided to bite the bullet and invest in a top level Melbourne Studio with a recommended engineer Craig Pilkington of Audrey Studios who assured me he could indeed make my sow’s ear into a silk purse. We had 3 possible days available and Craig said Yes, found the perfect dummer, Dave Folley, and proceeded to work his inestimable magic on it. He mixed and finally mastered the album on Monday March 16th - just as Australia went COV19 crazy. Here it is!

Belong to Country is dedicated to understanding this vast continent and our place in the scheme of things in an entirely new way. Really a very old way, that existed here for the longest time of any culture - surely the wisdom of how to live with Fire, with Flood, with sustainable growth, with other native beings and birds, lies with our aboriginal ancestors, past present and future. We just have to be willing to see.
