Written in the Stars was seeded when I read a Sydney Morning Herald article in which Eddie Mabo, now deceased, had a star named after him (Koiki) in the Southern Cross. The words -Thonar Tidai -Zinc Japue are in a neighbouring Torres Strait island dialect to Eddie’s (Mer)and mean -‘It is written in the Stars’. This song laments the fact that even after Eddie won the first claim to Native Title, our indigenous people are still fighting to be recognised in our Constitution as anything more than Fauna and Flora. The amazing Uluru Statement of the Heart, which has joined many many tribes in solidarity, was the latest attempt to be refused by Feds. What will it take for Australia to come of age, right its wrongs with a humbled heart and realise that our indigenous people are the key to our survival in this country - after all they have already weathered two major climatic events over the last 60,000 years.
