The Greta Turning was first drafted at a Joanna Macy retreat in NZ 3 years ago. Originally 3 pages long, it started out from my apologetic privileged consumer perspective, which changed suddenly after Greta Thunberg’s speech to the UN late last year. My take was that while not using plastic straws is important, the change needs to come from the top down, with systemic change from the 100 corporations who have the greatest responsibility, money and means to change this.
The Great Turning is an expression from Joanna calling us to feel, to embody, to grieve, to act on what is happening to the life on this planet and turn to a more life sustaining direction. It likens the trajectory of the human race to a giant oil tanker that is going to take massive influence to turn… and it will seem like nothing is happening, that things are getting worse….. and then one day we find ourselves on a radically different course - be that the ‘tipped’ point OR major systemic change. Likely both and just perhaps, Cov19 is a blessing in disguise. Thanks to the help of wordsmith Mark Tredinnik who incisively helped turn my 3 pages, into one core apocalyptic moment in time.
lyrics
We have been brainwashed
blinded to see
this climate denial - denial denial denial
Dark work of the Oligarchy
Democracy sold out Consumers for the powers of greed
And who can understand what Intentions command
this countermovement of hypocrisy
Time to wise up and see. What in hell is going on
When it takes a girl of 17 to cry "You're doing it all wrong"
"I shouldn't have to be here, I should be still in school"
but you've stolen my childhood, my future too"
What will it take
For a Great Turning where we join the children to fight
the real cause still warming in the fist of the right
lies the money, lies the might
I don't wanna believe they're evil but Greta might've got it right
what will it take
Interlude
With a Great Turning we could all be Navigators
Eyes to the wind, flying, our Ithaca's all aligning
And all of us Captains, all of us Crew
Humbled and hungry by the largesse of the view
And on that Great Turning , we allow ourselves to feel
this knife edge of Life n death, Reminds us how to kneel before
The Beauty of this Earth Respect again all the life
In face of our mortality, be moved from this Vice
And in that Great Turning how deeply woven threads
Waken us to wonder to that fragile butterfly wing
And the I and the I and the I of it all
Linking arms around the Sun
And back and back and back again
to Kin and Country again
What did it take?
How did we get through
It was only when,
we began
to think of
You
